According to Instagram, Goblincore is going to trend in 2022

In this line of work, you learn something new everyday – like Goblincore. Before today, I never knew what it was, but according to Instagram, it will trend heavily on the social media platform in 2022.

This as Instagram will be sharing its first ever Trends report this week, highlighting in particular what its Gen Z demographic of users will be doing in the coming year.

Along with Goblincore, which as it turns out has very little to do with goblins, but rather looks to use discarded natural elements to create a beautiful aesthetic, if the subculture’s Wiki page is to be believed, Instagram has highlighted a few other trends to be on the lookout for.

These include Dark Academia, which features quite heavily as an aesthetic with creators on YouTube, as well as Goth and Nostalgic Wear.

How the latter differs from Normcore, which reached its peak a few years ago, remains to be seen, but it is clear that the Gen Z community on Instagram will be experimenting heavily with different looks.

“50% of teens and young adults expected to experiment more with bolder looks, while nearly one in four young people are expected to thrift more online through second-hand websites like Depop and Poshmark,” notes Hypebeast, which was made privy to the Trends report before its official release.

“The amount of plant-based skincare, vegan makeup and products with sustainable ingredients looks set to increase too, with one in three young people predicted to learn more about cleaner skincare products in 2022,” the publication adds.

The fact that skincare and sustainable products will continue to thrive on Instagram makes a lot of sense, especially as promoting such products opens up plenty of opportunities for creators looking for sponsorship or endorsements.

Other interesting elements highlighted are guided meditation and manifestation exercises. with one in three young people expected to dabble in it. Given the turmoil and stress induced by the past two years under the pandemic, finding ways to manage stress will be a must for many.

With 2021 proving as tough a year as 2020 was, it looks like large swathes of social media users will be experimenting with different looks in 2022.

Now if you’l excuse me, I have to forage for some aesthetically pleasing plants and bark to put on my face.
