Adidas nets a cool $23 million from first NFT run

Clothing brands are embracing the metaverse. Or rather they soon will be, if they have not already, once they hear that Adidas made an estimated $23.5 million in a matter of hours by selling out 30 000 NFTs at the weekend.

The NFTs were the result of a collaboration between the sportswear giant, Bored Ape Yacht Club, Gmoney and Punks, with 5 924 in Ethereum being raked in, according to The Block.

The crypto-focused publication also noted that Early Stage of the sale, which kicked off on 17th December, saw roughly 20 000 NFTs sold at 0.2 Ethereum each, translating to $15.5 million of the aforementioned $23.5 million.

If there was ever a litmus test for interest in the metaverse and digital merchandise, this is certainly it. That said, it remains to be seen how much momentum this avenue will have in the long run, but for right now, companies are looking to make as much money from it as possible.

With Adidas already ahead of some of its competition, we could soon see Nike head down the same path, having last week finalised its acquisition of RTFKT, which specialises in creating digital apparel for the metaverse.

In a world where physically holding a piece of branded clothing is no longer the end goal, it looks like the metaverse will serve as one massive virtual shopping mall.
