Bungie’s head of human resources has stepped down

A report filed by IGN last week about the toxicity of Bungie’s workplace is seemingly starting to make waves within Bungie itself.

While South Africans were enjoying a public holiday recognising the Day of Reconciliation, Bungie’s senior employee relations manager, Gayle d’Hondt, tendered her resignation at the firm.

According to a report from Kotaku, d’Hondt sent a company-wide email on Thursday announcing her departure. Within that email it was said that in order for Bungie to move forward and overcome problems it has faced for years, the HR team must be comprised of people that are new to Bungie.

As IGN’s report highlighted, many of Bungie’s problems involved the employee relations department where complaints were ignored or those who were complained against were protected by longstanding members of the employee relations team.

It isn’t clear what d’Hondt’s involvement in the allegations made by former employees was but her email did mention her own experiences with an abusive co-worker. That co-worker was fired.

“I am proud of the work I did at this company. I believe I made recommendations that were in the best interest of our people and in service of the company we wish to become. I also believe we made some mistakes, and that to become the better version of ourselves – the company I know we can be – we have to acknowledge and confront them, in good faith, and grow together,” wrote d’Hondt.

We commend d’Hondt for recognising that in order for Bungie to change, stalwarts need to move on so that fresh eyes and ideas can come to the fore. Bungie still has a lot of work to do when it comes to cleaning its house but at least it has started the process.
