Five anime to keep on your radar for 2022

The past few seasons in terms of anime has proved quite promising. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that a new golden age of anime is on the horizon, provided some much-hyped adaptations live up to the billing.

To that end we’re looking at the upcoming anime seasons and have picked five titles that you should keep on your radar, if they aren’t there already.

Chainsaw Man

The first should surprise no one based in the header image above – Chainsaw Man.

When it was first announced that the Tatsuki Fujimoto manga was getting an adaptation, many people, ourselves included, have predicted that it would be the next series after Attack on Titan to be a must-watch regardless of what form of media you like to consume.

Just like Attack of Titan, MAPPA is the studio handling production of the series, and this month announced that it would be airing or be available to stream sometime in Summer (for Japan) in 2022.

A more precise date has not been mentioned, but you can be assured that the closer we get to its release, the greater the hype will be.

Where Jujutsu Kaisen surprised many, expect Chainsaw Man to be a runaway hit, serving up plenty of violence, an absurd love triangle and visuals that are likely to test you.

Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2

Speaking of Attack on Titan, part two of season four or the Final Season as it is referred to, is set to air on 9th January 2022 with episode 17. We have been following Eren Yeager and the fate of Eldian people for nearly a decade now, with the first Japanese dubbed season being released in 2013.

Now it all comes full circle. We have been particularly impressed with how our main protagonist has developed from the third to fourth season, taking up his role as an anti-hero quite well, along with providing us with a few gut churning moments in the process.

We’re excited to see how this story ends, although we already know given the myriad video essays on YouTube, but the series will certainly go down as a fan favourite and should be well worth revisiting in future.

Spy x Family

Next is something entirely new in the form of Spy x Family. The manga for this work is well known, and much like Chainsaw Man is hotly anticipated. Luckily though, you won’t have to wait for the Summer of 2022 to watch it, with Spy x Family scheduled for release in April of next year.

The series should be in good hands, with Wit Studio taking care of things. The studio’s recent track record, which includes hits like Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan, means it is well placed to take on an anime that was garnered a large following.

Just like Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2, the best way to enjoy it for those living in South Africa is to watch it on Crunchyroll. We’ve embedded the trailer for it below, if you’re interested in the idea of a spy living with a wife and kid, who just so happen to be spies too.

Spriggan

We are now heading over to Netflix, which is a streaming platform yet to perfect its anime to live-action adaptations, but the choice in terms of animated series is still enough to keep us coming back for more.

One series that we have been keeping an eye on since the beginning of this year already is Spriggan, with the series now set to debut in 2022.

Like Chainsaw Man, no date is mentioned, but the action we have glimpsed in teaser trailers to date makes it look as though it will be worth the wait. The property, which initially ran as a manga from 1989 to 1996, has since been made into a move in 1998 by some of the team behind Akira.

We aren’t expecting it to be as significant a moment in anime, but definitely worth marking in the calendar once a release date is confirmed.

Bubble

Our list is rounded off with a movie, and another Netflix-destined offering in Bubble. Set in Tokyo, the story centres around an event where bubbles descended on the Japanese city, altering the effects of gravity in the region, along with massive devastation.

What was left in the remnants is a world where young people who lost their families on the fateful day partake in parkour battles.

If you’re thinking this sounds a little bit too much like the storyline of a Step Up movie, we implore to watch the trailer below an enjoy the visuals. If that’s a sampler of what we could get next year, then sign us up on 28th April 2022.
