SA students: consider studying overseas with international scholarships

When South African students think about studying they usually keep things local with universities in their own province or other parts of this country. Studying overseas can be a difficult prospect when it comes to the costs involved and the lack of guidance, but international scholarships can help with both.

One of the most overlooked sites that the government maintains is the The International Scholarships website operated by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

“There are a number of scholarship opportunities currently available for South African students to undertake studies, research and exchanges in other countries. The [DHET] coordinates several such scholarships, while others are managed by other international, national and provincial departments or government agencies. Scholarships are for South African citizens and require a commitment to return to South African upon completion of studies,” reads the introduction on the home page of the site.

Students should explore the site to find what opportunities are available and pay particular attention to the calendar available on the homepage which lays out all the foreseeable opportunities.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, that calendar has not been updated for 2022. Instead please find, below, a list of all the available scholarships and other programmes listed on the site right now.

Click on the provided links to be taken to a details page for each programme. Readers should pay close attention to how these scholarships are organised and what is covered as well as what’s required of applicants. The small details, such as whether or not travel fees are included, can make a huge impact in the overall cost of these opportunities.

We also recommend checking back to the main site regularly as more scholarships are loaded onto it in 2022.
