The most popular artists streamed by South Africans on Spotify in 2021

Today is Spotify Wrapped day where users can see how much time they’ve spent listening to music and who they listened to the most.

Spotify Wrapped 2021 can be accessed via the Spotify apps for Apple iOS and Android and this year the firm once again made use of its Stories feature that we haven’t seen being used outside of Wrapped.

Before we take a closer look at data for South Africa it’s worth looking at what the world as a whole made popular in 2021.

The most streamed artists globally for 2021 are:

  1. Bad Bunny
  2. Taylor Swift
  3. BTS
  4. Drake
  5. Justin Bieber

The most streamed songs for 2021 are:

  1. drivers license – Olivia Rodrigo
  2. MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) – Lil Nas X
  3. STAY – The Kid LAROI featuring Justin Bieber
  4. good 4 u – Olivia Rodrigo
  5. Levitating – Dua Lipa featuring DaBaby

Looking specifically at South Africa, the lists are incredibly different and not only because South African artists feature on Spotify’s charts. For example, despite being the second most streamed artist in the world, Taylor Swift only ranks 9th in South Africa.

You can find the charts for South Africa below. Strangely Spotify didn’t highlight a chart for podcasts despite doing so for its international audience.

The TikTok factor

Something we find rather impressive is how much TikTok has influenced listening habits on Spotify speaking to the reach the video sharing platform has.

According to Spotify nearly 1 500 playlists were based on the pug Noodle and it’s predictions of whether a day is a “bones day” or a “no-bones day”.

The popularity of sea shanties on TikTok also bled out on to Spotify with 187 000 sea shanty playlists being created in the last year.

Perhaps in 2022 we’ll see more creators from TikTok featuring on Spotify’s Wrapped.
