Today applications to several internship positions at the Market Theatre Foundation close, so those looking for employment, education and a way to fill out their CVs will need to act fast.

The Market Theatre is a rather famous part of South African history, important in the collective culture of our country and its fight against Apartheid. Applicants can learn more about it on the about page here, but it’s safe to say this isn’t the usual office job internship.

“The Market Theatre Foundation in partnership with Yes4Youth have the opportunity to offer currently unemployed young people from previously disadvantaged communities the opportunity to rejoin the workforce through a sponsored internship programme. The successful applicants will have a 12-month fixed term contract at R5000.00 p.m. which will them to benefit from being associated with and gaining hands on experience at the prestigious and world-renowned cultural institution in the Market Theatre Foundation as well as a dynamic, innovative and lateral thinking creative,” reads the description for the programme.

While R5 000 per month isn’t a lot, it’s more than the unpaid internships that often do the rounds which are exploiting the labour market right now.

Some criteria is shared by these openings such as applicants’ ages needing to be between 21 and 35, and the one-year fixed term nature of the contract. There are, however, key differences between each which can be found on the applications page here.

The Market Theatre Foundation positions listed above have been open for some time now but were recently given the spotlight by the University of South Africa (Unisa) which posted on Facebook encouraging students to apply.
