COVID-19 in South Africa: 13th January 2022

As the week progresses, so does the number of newly recorded infections and fatalities for COVID-19 in South Africa increases.

As such, it looks like the country is still trying to shake off the effects of the fourth wave, which is driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant, along with many South Africans still choosing not to get vaccinated despite the overwhelming need to reach population immunity.

According to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), 6 762 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, as the total number of infections to date has increased to 3 540 891.

The NDoH also notes that 181 fatalities have been reported too, which is again a sharp increase from the previous day, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa climbs to 92 830.

Other key figures in the latest report show the recovery rate rising to 93.5 percent despite the increase in new infections, with 3 309 735 recoveries recorded so far.

As for the vaccine rollout, turnout to sites across the country dipped in the past 24 hours, with 72 871 jabs administered.

As of 17:00 on 12th January, a total of 28 585 930 vaccines have been administered in SA, with an estimated 16 244 418 people fully vaccinated at this stage, factoring in recent booster shots too.
