UJ students and staff reminded of mandatory vaccination dates

With the 2022 academic year picking up steam, the management of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has issued a reminder to both students and employees about vaccinations.

UJ is a “mandatory COVID-19 vaccination site” whose policy is laid out in this PDF which is attached to important dates that need to be adhered to for study and work at the university.

Partial (one dose) and full (two doses) vaccination statues must be shared by the university by some hard deadlines in the coming months unless an exemption has been applied for under medical or religious reasons.

These dates are –

Employees:

  • Partial vaccination on 1st February
  • Full vaccination on 15th March

Students:

  • Partial vaccination on 14th February
  • Full vaccination on 31st March

“Partially vaccinated students will be conditionally registered, with access granted to campuses or facilities. Accommodation in campus residences for partially vaccinated students will be allowed. A student that is not fully vaccinated by 31 March 2022 without an approved exemption application, shall not be permitted to remain registered for study at UJ,” the reminder from UJ reads.

More details for the specifics of submitting proof of vaccination can be found here.

Finally, for those who are having trouble accessing a vaccination site because of transport, the university is assisting with this on a regular basis.

“We wish to remind you that the Logistics Department will provide transport to the Netcare Milpark and Liberty Life COVID-19 vaccination sites on Mondays and Thursdays between 14h00 and 16h00. Requests from employees must be submitted via their line manager to the campus health clinic a day in advance so that proper arrangements can be made,” the announcement continues.

It’s interesting to see how the various universities are handling the requirements for vaccinations. Earlier this week the University of Pretoria put out a statement that “We strongly encourage everyone to vaccinate” and went on to explain that mandatory vaccination would only be needed for specific areas such as health Sciences.

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is more in line with UJ as vaccination is also mandatory and must be done by 1st March.
