Android 13 keeps dessert naming tradition alive with Tiramisu

When it comes to naming its mobile operating systems, Google has always looked to desserts for inspiration. That changed in 2019 when Android Q was called Android 10, but it looks Android 13 still has an internal codename – Tiramisu.

The use of the delicious Italian dessert was spotted in the first developer preview of Android 13 by 9to5Google, with the publication noting that it appears in the About Phone section of the Android Version in Settings.

“Usually, this page denotes either the actual Android version, or a letter. For instance, Android 12 previews used ‘S’ to denote the Android version,” the publication writes.

“With Android 13, though, Google is using the desert name in a rather public-facing manner, which is certainly surprising! Nonetheless, it’s something we’re glad to see, as it’s a nice reminder of Android’s fun history,” it adds.

It is indeed nice to see and hopefully means that Google is letting a little bit of silliness enter its ecosystem again. Whether we could see it lean into the Tiramisu name, as it has done with past iterations of dessert-named mobile operating systems remains to be seen.

That said, we think the marketing team at Google may have missed a trick, as Toblerone would have been a perfect tie-in for Android 13.

As The Verge points out, the next few iterations could prove a problem in terms of naming, with few options coming to mind we think about U, V, W, X, Y and Z.
