COVID-19 in South Africa: 11th February 2022

It is the morning after the 2022 State of the Nation Address (SONA) and while the biggest headline grabber is the further decriminalisation of cannabis, there was oddly little noted with regard to COVID-19 in South Africa.

On that front, President Cyril Ramaphosa made specific mention of the importance of the vaccination rollout, stating that an estimated 42 percent of all adults are fully vaccinated.

Whether that is enough to effective handle the impact of future waves of infection, remains to be seen.

Sticking with the latest vaccination numbers, the past 24 hours has seen 65 941 jabs administered, as turnout to sites across the country continues to present a hurdle. As of 17:00 on 10th February, a total of 30 468 125 vaccines have been administered across SA.

Looking at the other important statistics on COVID-19 in South Africa ahead of the weekend, the National Department of Health (NDoH) says 3 169 cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, as the total number of infections to date rises to 3 634 811.

The department also notes that 203 fatalities have been reported too, with 12 of these added as a result of an ongoing audit at the NDoH.

As for the recovery rate, it continues to hover at 96.1 percent, with a reported 3 494 016 recoveries tallied so far.
