COVID-19 in South Africa: 14th March 2022

In recent weeks the numbers for COVID-19 in South Africa appear to be decreasing, although it still remains unclear if we are fully out of the effects of the fourth wave of infections.

Should these low numbers continue, there will no doubt be more calls for further easing of lockdown restrictions and potentially a removal of lockdown altogether.

If that is indeed to happen, however, far more people need to be fully vaccinated in order to ensure that we can stave off the impact of a fifth wave, which could happen around the Easter holiday period next month.

Either way, the spread of the virus is till something the country needs to be cognisant of as we near the two year anniversary of lockdown first being implemented in SA.

Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), the past 24 hours has seen 972 cases recorded. The result sees the total number of infections recorded to date climb to 3 694 504.

The department also notes that 13 fatalities have been reported, with the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sitting at 99 725.

As for the vaccine rollout, owing to it being a Sunday, the past 24 hours has only seen 5 344 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 13th March 2022, a total of 32 548 342 vaccines have been administered across SA.
