COVID-19 in South Africa: 8th March 2022

On Sunday evening, the daily report on COVID-19 in South Africa featured an anomaly in the form of no newly recorded fatalities. It prompted several calls to bring an end to all lockdown restrictions, with the DA being the staunchest advocate.

While figures related to the spread of the virus are indeed trending downward, there is still the prospect of future waves of infection to contend with, coupled with the fact that not enough people in the country are fully vaccinated yet.

As such, it will remain to be seen if government will bow to mounting pressure as we near the two year anniversary of lockdown first being announced later this month.

Looking at the latest report from the NDoH, the past 24 hours has seen 801 new cases recorded, as the total number of infections to date has climbed to 3 685 120.

The department adds that 62 fatalities have been reported too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rises to 99 609.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 92 015 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 7th March 2022, a total of 32 126 152 vaccines have been administered, with an estimated 17 234 434 people fully vaccinated at this stage.
