Starfield pops up again in 2022, but still no gameplay

Starfield, the next open world RPG from Bethesda, has broken radio silence for 2022 with another episode of “Into the Starfield”.

You may remember that the first episode of this web series was released in November 2021 so it’s been a good few months since we saw the game.

Like the previous episode this features members of the development team talking about the game and how it is being put together. Emil Pagliarulo (Design Director), Will Shen (Lead Quest Designer), Istvan Pely (Lead Artist) and good old Todd Howard (Game Director) are all here.

Howard interestingly points out that the team have been making these kinds of games for so long that the industry has caught up and now open world RPGs are rather common. This leaves Bethesda in a position to make something different from the norm while still creating something satisfying for “older hardcore RPG” fans.

Several pieces of tech used to make Starfield – such as photo scanning to make more believable environments and NPCs – are mentioned.

This episode also gives us a taste of how the game will start. Bethesda RPGs are (in)famous for starting off with the player in some kind of prison or other incarceration, but it seems Starfield will start differently with the player being hired by one of the megacorporations that run the galaxy.

How these megacorporations interact with the player and how they’re opposed to the space pirate faction the Crimson Fleet will also be a pillar of the game.

While there’s still no gameplay we do get a glimpse of what seems to be a robotic companion which calls the player captain (see it in the header image above).

Finally conversations and persuasion are brought up with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion mentioned. It seems some elements of its systems will be used here.

Following Bethesda’s acquisition by Microsoft, Starfield is exclusive to platforms from the company and as such it’s scheduled for release on 11th November 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
