Students invited to event for France – South Africa scholarship

Tomorrow – 16th March – South African students are encouraged to tune into a livestream event hosted by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Embassy of France in Pretoria and Campus France for an information session around scholarships.

The event will take place between 11:00 and 12:00  and can be joined right here on Microsoft Teams.

We’re glad to see that the stream is kept rather short and around lunchtime as it makes it easier to attend for those working full time.

This is part of the France – South Africa Scholarship Programme which, according to its website, is intended for South African students who are interested in studying in France starting in September 2023 towards a Master’s degrees or PhD.

As for why the programme is positioned later than expected, it’s due to differences between our countries, though studies will begin sooner than expected.

“Due to the differences between the Southern and Northern hemisphere calendars, laureates will follow a specific programme in South Africa from February 2023 to July 2023. This track will include online French courses organized by the network of the Alliances Françaises. It may also include an internship in French Companies and organisations based in South Africa, depending on the opportunities and the profile of each laureate,” an explanation reads.

Those thinking of applying are instructed to give the rulebook a read which is accessible here.

Some important information is provided here such as the fact that the application process is done entirely online and that this is a full scholarship which includes return tickets to France, allowances and more.

As will likely be covered in the livestream tomorrow, applicants need to be cognisant of the timeline for the scholarship:

  • The next call for applications will be open between mid April 2022 and 16October 2022 at 23:59 SA time.
  • The 2022 Season of webinars organised by Campus France South Africa will provide students with all useful information to prepare their applications
  • Interview of the eligible candidates: November 2022
  • Results: end of November/early December 2022
  • Specific programme in South Africa (online [French] courses and possibly internship): February 2023 – July 2023
  • Departure to France: Early September 2023

Finally, despite the name of this endeavour, the France – South Africa Scholarship Programme is also open to students from and Malawi and Lesotho.
