Subscribers can now pay for Spotify with Google Play Billing

Spotify has announced that subscribers can now make use of either Spotify Billing or link their subscription to their Google Play account and make use of funds from there to pay their bill.

This is thanks to a new agreement between Google and Spotify, with Spotify subscribers to make use the service’s own payment system or Google Play Billing.

“Spotify is on a years-long journey to ensure app developers have the freedom to innovate and compete on a level playing field. We’re excited to be partnering with Google to explore this approach to payment choice and opportunities for developers, users, and the entire internet ecosystem. We hope the work we’ll do together blazes a path that will benefit the rest of the industry,” says Alex Norström, Spotify’s chief freemium business officer – their designation not ours.

With this announcement there is now a way to get Spotify Premium at a discount or in extreme instances, without paying a cent of your own money.

Earlier this month Google launched Google Opinion Rewards in five countries including South Africa as per a report from Android Police. This free app can be downloaded here and you will be answering survey questions. For your time, Google will award you with funds credited to your Google Play account.

Granted, the amount you earn from these survey’s won’t see you amassing new movies, books and premium apps every day, but you could earn enough to at least give yourself a bit of a discount on your monthly Spotify bill. As an example, we signed up last week and we made roughly R3 from two surveys. As we said, it’s not a huge amount, but we’ll take a discount where we can find it.

“This step is an important milestone for mobile app stores and I can’t imagine a better first partner than Spotify. They value choice as much as we do and understand the importance and continued investment in Android and Play to the health of the entire ecosystem. This is an exciting first step and we look forward to adding new partners and learning how this model could be expanded across the platform,” vice president of product management at Google, Sameer Samat added in a statement.
