Unisa hosting weekend event on mindset in studies

The University of South Africa (Unisa) is, this weekend, hosting an event to aid students in their studies when it comes to how they approach things.

The name of the event is rather long and ponderous with the announcement calling it “Developing a Growth Mindset and Reading Strategies to excel in your studies”.

This will be a livestream on Microsoft Teams tomorrow, 12th March, starting at 09:30 and continuing until 12:00.

“The purpose of the session is to help UNISA students to identify the impact of mindset on their studies, and to adopt a growth mindset in order to excel in their studies and for lifelong learning. Strategies for reading with understanding, will be unpacked to enhance study process,” the description reads.

The link to join the event on Microsoft Teams can be found here.

Below is the agenda for the event.

  • 09:30 – 10:10 | Developing a growth mindset: Ms Somtsewu (Student Counsellor)
  • 10:10 – 10:50 | Reading strategies: Ms Kemp (Reading and Writing Acalit Facilitator)
    • Reflection by students: strategies used to be successful in my studies: ( 10 min)
    • The working and studying student: Ms Gongqa
  • 10:50 – 11:35 | The full-time student: Ms Yako
    • The full time and student leadership volunteer: Mr Konkwane
  • 11h35 – 11:45 | Counselling website: Online resources for your studies
  • 11:45 – 11:55 | #Group Chats
  • 11:55 – 12:00 | Closure and Evaluation: Ms Somtsewu

Looking through the agenda and it looks like an interesting event with some solid resources for students. Many students often overlook the importance of carefully reading through their work on top of the mindset aspect of the presentation.

We’re also interested in learning what the counselling website in the 11:35 slot is. Unisa has a nasty reputation for not replying to student communications so we have to wonder if this website is a first party offering from the university or something else offered by an outside company.

While it’s mentioned in the description that this is an event for Unisa students we don’t see anything that would limit interested parties from attending
