COVID-19 in South Africa: 11th April 2022

Today marks the start of an important time for the country in terms of the continued fight against COVID-19 in South Africa.

This as the national state of disaster has been lifted by government, along with the coming weeks featuring a number of public holidays and of course the Easter weekend. These days, coupled with the lifting of certain restrictions, are believed to be a potential trigger for a fifth wave of infections.

If that comes to fruition, it remains to be seen how the country will cope, especially as we are yet to reach population immunity with our vaccination efforts.

For now though, the number of daily cases regarding the spread of the virus remain relatively low.

To that end, the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 828 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. The total number of infections recorded to date has since risen to 3 732 075.

The department also notes that zero fatalities have been reported, which is not the first that has happened in the past few weeks. As such, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 100 096.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has been slow in terms of turnout owing to it being a Sunday. On that front only 5 845 jabs have been administered and as of 17:00 on 10th April, a total of 34 146 981 vaccines have been administered to date in SA.
