COVID-19 in South Africa: 28th April 2022

As we reach the end of April this week, it looks like the flurry of recent public holidays coupled with a change of season is indeed having an impact on COVID-19 in South Africa.

This as the daily figures related to the spread of the virus show a distinct rise. While we have not seen a large enough surge yet to call it a fifth wave, the past 24 hours has seen the most number of new cases recorded in quite a few weeks.

To that end the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 6 372 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, which is quite given that yesterday was a public holiday.

Consequently, the total number of cases recorded to date now sits at 3 776 298.

The department also notes that three fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has increased to 100 351. Other key figures sees the recovery rate dip once again to 96.3 percent.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen only 10 469 jabs administered owing to the aforementioned public holiday. As of 17:00 on 27th April 2022, a total of 34 729 327 vaccines have been administered across SA.
