COVID-19 in South Africa: 29th April 2022

As the country gets ready for another long weekend as a result of Worker’s Day, what would normally be a time to decompress is made more stressful thanks to a rise in cases for COVID-19 in South Africa.

Added to this is a drop in temperature and the ever-looming threat of loadshedding. For now, the power remains on, but that could change at any time.

As for the spread of the virus, this week has seen newly recorded daily figures rise significantly, although we have not hit a surge at the time of writing.

According to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), the past 24 hours has seen 4 146 new cases recorded, as the total number of infections for the country to date has reached 3 780 444.

The department also notes that four fatalities have been recorded too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 100 355. Looking at other key figures, the recovery rate has remained at 96.3 percent, while more than 24.42 million tests have been conducted so far.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 62 400 jabs administered, with turnout increasing nicely. As of 17:00 on 28th April 2022, a total of 34 806 757 vaccines have been administered across SA.
