COVID-19 in South Africa: 5th April 2022

With April now in full swing, the year is truly flying by. It also means we are nearing a quarter of 2022 dealing with COVID-19 in South Africa.

Added to this is the fact that the country is waiting to hear government’s plans with regards to a new system to replace the current national state of disaster.

In the interim though, we still need to concern ourselves with the spread of the virus, especially as the Easter holidays have been earmarked as a potential trigger for a fifth wave of infections.

For now though, the number of daily infections remains relatively low. To that end, the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 685 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, as the total number of infections to date now sits at 3 723 639.

The department also notes that two fatalities have been reported, with the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa currently 100 052.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has only 49 076 jabs administered, with more needing to be done in order to increase turnout. As of 17:00 on 4th April 2022, a total of 33 875 176 jabs have been administered.
