Loadshedding will be reduced to Stage 2 on Thursday evening

Following a media briefing earlier today, Eskom has now announced that loadshedding will be reduced to Stage 2 on Thursday evening at 22:00.

The reduction in frequency of loadshedding has come about thanks to generation units at Majube, Matimba and Arnot power stations being returned to service on Wednesday evening. Unfortunately a single unit at Tutuka power station was shut down for repairs on Wednesday evening.

Despite Eskom expecting two more units to return to service in the next 24 hours, Stage 2 loadshedding will persist through until Friday evening. Eskom did not give an exact time as to when Stage 2 will continue nor has it confirmed whether loadshedding will persist into the weekend.

The utility also noted that it will continue adjusting the stage of loadshedding depending on the level of breakdowns.

During it’s briefing on Thursday morning Eskom reported that 14 303MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned failures while 5 172MW. Now in its latest power alert the utility reports that 14 493MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned breakdowns while a further 5 349MW is unavailable due to planned maintenance.

While this means that Eskom has lost capacity in the few hours that have passed since that briefing, we suspect the two units expected to return to service in the next 24 hours will help address demand.
