Twitter bans climate change denial advertising outright

On Friday, people around the world recognised Earth Day as we try to get a handle on harmful emissions and attempt to undo much of the harm humanity has done to our world.

And yet, climate change denial is rife around the world. In a bid to address climate change denial, Twitter has announced an outright ban on advertising that contradicts the scientific consensus on climate change.

“We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetized on Twitter, and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” Twitter’s manager for global sustainability, Casey Junod, and director of sustainability, Seán Boyle, wrote in a blog post on Friday.

The social media firm only names one body that will inform its policy – the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – but does state that its approach is informed by “authoritative sources”.

What Twitter won’t be doing, at least not yet, is diving into conversations about climate change to police things. That having been said, we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw this approach change in the coming months.

“We recognize that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet. In the coming months, we’ll have more to share on our work to add reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations happening on Twitter,” the social media firm said.

While this is a good move on Twitter’s part, the success of this comes down to how well it’s enforced and we will have to see how well Twitter does in preventing climate change denial advertising on its platform.

To that end, it would really be nice if Twitter gave users the ability to flag tweets for potential misinformation, climate change or otherwise given how other social media and tech firms have failed to enforce similar policies.
