Always-On display reportedly coming to iPhone via iOS 16

Next week the 2022 edition of Apple’s annual WWDC developer conference kicks off on 6th June. The event will bring with it several announcements regarding the software side of Apple’s business, along with looks at operating systems for different platforms, such as iOS 16.

The company will likely offer developers a deep dive on the features that it has baked into the latest version on iOS, with reports suggesting that an always-on display is finally on its way.

This according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who shared the scoop in his latest Power On newsletter. Given Gurman’s solid track record when it comes to rumours or reports of this nature, the impending arrival of always-on display functionality via iOS 16 seems increasingly likely.

Along with his report, Gurman suggests that the feature will not roll out to all iPhone devices that are compatible with iOS 16, noting that the next iPhone Pro models are expected to debut an always-on display first.

As Engadget points out, that had been Apple’s plan with the iPhone 13 Pro models last year, but for undisclosed reasons, it had to be scrapped.

Along with the aforementioned display feature, iOS 16 is also believed to be adding window resizing for multitasking to the mix, as Apple looks to make use of the screen real estate on offer on its newer devices. Either way, all will be revealed next week at WWDC.

With this year’s iPhone production reportedly behind schedule, it seems like users will have to wait quite a long time before they can get access to this feature which has been available on Android devices for a number of years already.
