With April and its flurry of public holidays behind us, the country begins May with the spectre of an increase in daily recorded infections for COVID-19 in South Africa.
We are yet to see a distinct surge in numbers, but it is clear that the past two weeks and change in season has seen a rise in cases regarding the spread of the virus.
That said, we have not reached fifth wave level in terms of figures, so it remains to be seen what steps government will take should the statistics on COVID-19 in South Africa continue to rise.
For now the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 2 650 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. This sees the total number of infections recorded to date climb to 3 798 413. The department also notes that seven fatalities have been recorded too, as the death toll related to the spread of the virus now sits at 100 370.
Other key figures sees the recovery rate drop to 96.1 percent, while more than 24.50 million tests have been conducted to date.
As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has only seen 5 030 jabs administered owing to it being a public holiday. As of 17:00 on 2nd May 2022, a total of 34 887 157 vaccines have been administered across the country.
