Over the past couple of weeks we have seen the number of newly recorded cases for COVID-19 in South Africa begin to rise. This the result of the numerous public holidays during the month of April, along with the change of season and colder weather.
While we have not seen a surge in cases to warrant calling it a fully blown fifth wave, the daily reports regarding the spread of the virus will no doubt be watched intently.
Added to this will be the recent announcement of stage 2 loadshedding until next week Monday, adding a further blight to what has been a difficult few weeks for many people in the country.
Shifting back to COVID-19 in South Africa and the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) shows a 3 785 new cases being recorded over the past 24 hours. Consequently, the total number of infections to date now sits at 3 802 198.
The department also notes that seven fatalities have been recorded too, which is the same number as the previous day. As a result, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa is 100 377.
As for the vaccine rollout, which still remains our best defence against the impact of future waves of infection, the past 24 hours has seen 50 591 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 2nd May 2022, a total of 34 941 461.
