Free Top Gun DLC launches for Microsoft Flight Simulator

If you feel the need… the need for speed, well then Microsoft Flight Simulator has you covered as it has just released a free expansion for Top Gun: Maverick.

Live right now the free content was developed in partnership with the film company Paramount Pictures and, by watching the trailer at the bottom of this story, we can see why.

We won’t spoil any parts of the movie – check out our spoiler-free review by the way – but we can say that some scenes from it are recreated almost identically in the trailer.

We’re always weary of any trailer claiming to be completely in-game footage, and we don’t want to repeat the trope of “this game looks just like real life” but, damn, what we see see here looks just about on par with the movie.

If you removed the Microsoft Flight Simulator branding from this trailer and showed it to a stranger we’re sure they’d mistake it for movie footage.

So what can players look forward to in this free expansion? The list below lays it out and its quite extensive for something that costs no money.

  • A ‘Top Gun: Maverick Edition’ livery for the F/A-18E Super Hornet.
  • Three training missions for the Super Hornet that will allow you to master radical flight maneuvers including unrestricted take-offs, split S maneuvers, and low altitude, high-speed maneuvering through complex terrain.
  • Five high-speed, low-level challenges that require utmost skill to navigate just above mountains and traverse through canyons.
  • A carrier deck landing challenge, one of the most demanding operations in the world of military aviation.
  • A never-before-unveiled hypersonic aircraft that can attain speeds of Mach 10 and altitudes greater than 150,000 feet above sea level.
  • A mission to roar into the stratosphere.
