Twitter execs being let go as company implements a hiring freeze

The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk was surely going to bring changes to the company but we didn’t expect to see chief executive officer Parag Agrawal firing executives before Musk has even selected an office.

On Thursday, a pair of executives took to Twitter to announce that Agrawal had let them go. This includes consumer product lead Kayvon Beykpour and general manager of revenue Bruce Falck. Both executives have expressed their disappointment at being sacked and Beykpour was given the news while on paternity leave.

As is so often the case with firms firing or losing employees, one person will now be taking over the responsibilities of these two executives. As The Verge reports, this person is Jay Sullivan. The other reason Sullivan now has the responsibilities of two roles is because Twitter is instituting a hiring freeze.

This was announced by Agrawal in a memo sent to staff members that was obtained by The Verge.

The Twitter CEO recounts how Twitter invested heavily in growing its audience and revenue at the top to 2020. However, the CEO says “we did not hit intermediate milestones that enable confidence in these goals” and adds that the war in Ukraine has impacted its results.

Twitter will still hire roles that are deemed business critical where possible. Leaders will also make changes to improve efficiencies where needed.

This is all very foreboding and likely doesn’t instill much hope in employees ahead of Musk’s pending acquisition. The billionaire has previously said that he would shrink Twitter’s staff in order to right the ship and this latest news surely isn’t helping staff morale.
