Watch the new Range Rover Sport complete the Spillway Climb in Iceland

This week Land Rover unveiled its new 2022 model of Range Rover Sport.

We have already seen its bigger brethren in the luxury-filled Range Rover, and this new iteration is expected in South Africa by the end of 2022 with Land Rover expected to share pricing, local model options and pre-order status in the coming months.

In the interim then, we have a stunt to fawn at marking the launch of the 2022 Range Rover Sport, with driver Jessica Hawkins taking the rapid 4×4 up a Spillway Climb in Iceland’s Karahnjukar Dam.

The video, pasted at the end of this post, showcases the capabilities of the vehicle as Hawkins prepares to take the Spillway Climb. As such, it is fairly solid advertisement to show off what the new Range Rover Sport can do, so hopefully it will be used for climbing more than pavements when it is made available in SA.

As for what delivers said performance, the new Range Rover Sport is is based on Land Rover’s flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA-Flex). In terms of what is under the bonnet, a new V8 Twin Turbo engine is present on the model used for the aforementioned run, which develops 390kW of power and musters 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Looking at some of the other options in the lineup, it will include two six-cylinder extended range electric hybrid plug-ins, which provide a purely electric-powered driving range of up to 113km.

“Customers can also choose from powerful and efficient mild hybrid petrol and diesel Ingenium engines, while pure-electric propulsion will be available in 2024, as Land Rover continues its electrification journey,” Land Rover adds.

In terms of other new features, while the speed and power is easy to see displayed in the video below, Land Rover has also highlighted Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control, which offers a choice of four settings over rough surfaces.

The new Range Rover Sport is the first Land Rover vehicle to feature this capability, the company confirms, with its Pivi Pro infotainment system added to the mix. Having seen the latter in action on the new Defender models, the in-cabin experience should be good.

The latest offering from Land Rover is sure to have plenty of suitors, so it will be interesting to see just how much it retails for in SA later this year. For now, enjoy the video after the break.
