COVID-19 in South Africa: 1st June 2022

It is the start of a new month, but June 2022 brings with it several problems outside of COVID-19 in South Africa.

Key among these is the continued threat of loadshedding as the temperature drops, along with a rise in petrol costs that will have knock on effects elsewhere in the country.

As we brace ourselves for a tough month ahead, we still need to take note of the latest figures regarding the spread of the virus from the National Department of Health (NDoH). To that end the NDoH says 2 809 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, as the total number of infections recorded to date has since climbed to 3 957 777.

The department also notes that 28 fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has reached 101 190. Other key figures in the report show that the recovery rate remains unmoved at 96.3 percent, while more than 25.25 million tests have been conducted so far.

Looking at the vaccine rollout, which still remains the country’s best defence against future waves of infection, the past 24 hours has seen 38 585 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 31st May 2022, a total of 36 105 946 vaccines have been administered across SA.
