iOS 16 will add the ability to report spam SMS messages

iOS 16 is currently in the second phase of beta, with developers getting the chance to explore all the new features that the latest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system has to offer.

One of those new features will be the ability to report spam SMS messages, as spotted by MacRumors.

The ability to report spam SMS on your iPhone has existed for a little while now, but was limited to iMessage and the report went as far as Apple itself. This new version of the same feature will allow users to report to their phone network or carrier, as well as the Cupertino-based company.

It should be pointed out that reporting will not block an unwanted number from sending spam SMS messages, as this will still need to be done manually within iOS 16.

It is also unclear at this stage which service providers or networks will be making use of the feature too, with Apple noting that it is limited to a select number of carriers at this stage.

Given the increasing frequency of spam SMS in South Africa, along with PoPIA coming into effect last year, hopefully the likes of Vodacom and MTN will be chomping at the bit to make this feature available to its iPhone customers.

At this stage phase 2 of the beta is restricted to developers for now, but the public who have signed up can get access to it in July. The fully fledged version of iOS is expected in September, but no precise date is mentioned yet.
