LEGO to make cars based on 007, Fast & Furious… again

LEGO has announced two new sets based on James Bond and Fast & Furious and they’re rather unusual for a number of reasons.

The first of these is that they are part of the Speed Champions line. Speed Champions is a theme of LEGO sets based on road and racing cars started in 2015.

Up until now all the cars in the range have been factual with a focus on realism with no fictional edge to them at all. These two new sets change that.

The second reason this is odd is due to the choice of cars: the 007 Aston Martin DB5 and the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T as LEGO has made sets based on them before.

Both of the previous iterations (sets 10262 and 42111) were much larger with thousands of pieces each and prices to match.

These new Speed Champions versions offer smaller, cheaper cars for kids and adults alike on top of the third reason it’s a break from formula: the minifigures.

Minifigures included in past Speed Champions sets have been unnamed race car drivers and miscellaneous pit crew. Now, however, the minifigures are James Bond himself and Dominic Toretto.

With all these oddities aside let’s look at the cars themselves.

Set 76911: 007 Aston Martin DB5 has 298 pieces and one minifigure. Set 76912: Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T has 345 pieces and one minifigure too.

Both are scheduled for release on 1st August and will likely, unfortunately, fall victim to LEGO’s upcoming price increase that will affect many of its toys.

When we get localised pricing for the two sets, as well as any information about how that price increase will affect South Africa, we will provide an update.

It’s worth mentioning that the standard price for Speed Champions cars of this size in South Africa is already not cheap at R369 each. Hopefully if the price increase does happen to these it’s minimal, or they dodge the mark up altogether.
