Unisa announces revised graduations ending in August

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has provided some concrete details for its students who have had their graduation ceremonies delayed.

At the end of April protest action forced these ceremonies to stop mirroring similar events which played out in March.

After the cancellation and a long stretch of silence the University announced that the events would continue from 27th June but provided no information past that date.

This has thankfully changed.

“Unisa is proud to announce additional dates for its physical graduation ceremonies, which will resume at the university’s campuses on 27 June 2022 and extend to 5 August 2022,” an announcement reads.

The ceremonies will be broken down into six series which are expanded upon below:

  • First series: Polokwane, 27th and 28th June 2022
  • Second series: Muckleneuk Campus (Tshwane), 1st to 8th July 2022
  • Third series: Cape Town, 11th to 13th July 2022
  • Fourth series: Durban (1), 18th to 22th July 2022
  • Fifth series: East London, 27th and 28th July 2022
  • Sixth series: Durban (2), 1st to 5th August 2022

When the 27th June date was announced many students on Twitter expressed fears that there would be too many students at each ceremony due to the backlog caused by the protests. Breaking the events down into six smaller ones may help that issue but we will have to wait and see how that pans out.

Those graduating will also need to do more waiting as individual invites to these will be sent out.

“Students will receive personalised invitations to these graduation ceremonies. Once again, the university apologises for the inconvenience caused by the unforeseen postponement of the previous graduation ceremonies,” Unisa ends.
