The month of August is Women’s Month in South Africa and GirlCode will be hosting hackathons throughout South Africa to mark the occassion.
Now in its seventh year, the GirlCode Hackathon 2022 will be taking place in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban from 6th – 7th August. The hackathon for 2022 will sport a R60 000 cash prize, as well as R1 000 vouchers from Takealot.
“The GirlCode Hackathon plays a critical role in South Africa’s innovation ecosystem by growing our pipeline of female software developers at the grassroots,” chief executive officer at GirlCode, Zandile Mkwanazi. “Everyone who participates comes away with new skills, ideas and networks that will continue to fuel our innovation into the future.”
The hackathon is open to female students studying an IT related course, as well as graduates with less than two years working experience. Participants will work together to create a website, a game or an app that addresses a real world challenge. Registration costs R50, but food and drinks will be provided throughout the weekend of the hackathon.
The event also welcomes a new sponsor for 2022, Vuma.
