Huawei confirms recipients of 2022 Bursary Awards

Tomorrow is World Youth Skills Day, which will see a number of businesses and organisations highlight what the plans are for creating greater access to skills development for young people in their respective regions.

In the case of Huawei South Africa, the company’s 2022 Bursary Awards will take the focus, with the current cohort of recipients already earmarked.

This year Huawei awarded 44 bursaries to students from six universities that it has established partnerships with and by the end of the year, it hopes to have awarded bursaries to a further 11 students, bringing the total to 55.

For those unfamiliar with the Bursary Awards, it was started by Huawei South Africa in 2019 and has sponsored approximately 184 students to the value of R23.5 million over a relatively short period of time.

“Huawei South Africa has several initiatives to empower and upskill young South Africans so that they can positively contribute to the local digital economy,” noted Daniel Jiang, Human Resource director at the company in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“This is a long-term investment for Huawei and is part of our ICT talent ecosystem programme to develop and mature our young generation of ICT practitioners into world-class experts. As a company, it is an honour to invest in future technology innovators and thought leaders. It is also rewarding to see young, ambitious people investing in their futures,” he added.

Along with the Bursary Awards, promising students are offered the opportunity to join Huawei’s graduate programme too, with the company taking on between 60 to 70 graduates each year.

“Huawei is seriously invested in South Africa’s youth. Our bursary programme is one of the mechanisms we use to ensure that South Africa’s top ICT talent are supported to achieve their personal ambitions & contribute to the greater ICT sector, which will form the future economy of our country,” highlighted Mohammed Bismilla, head of the Huawei Bursary Programme.

Bismilla can be seen in the right of the header image above alongside Amanda Mbehle, who participated in both the bursary and graduate programmes and is now a product manager at Huawei.

“Huawei has always embraced an active, open, and diverse talent development culture. We want to give talented, young people as many opportunities as possible,” she enthused regarding the programmes.
