Sam Kerr the first female player to feature on FIFA Ultimate Edition cover

Later this week, 20th July at 18:00 local time to be precise, we will get our first reveal trailer for FIFA 23.

With previous iterations failing to impress, this year’s edition is notable for a number of reasons, the most interesting of which is the split between EA Sports and FIFA that will happen next year.

For now though, we have a significant milestone to celebrate as the cover athletes for the Ultimate Edition of FIFA 23 have been revealed. To that end Kylian Mbappe, who has appeared on three consecutive covers to date, will feature alongside Sam Kerr, who is the first female player to appear on the Ultimate Edition.

The Australian international, who can be seen in the image tweeted out earlier this week below, is wearing her Chelsea FC kit for the cover, with Mbappe also donning his PSG club colours.

Kerr had a helluva season during the last campaign, scooping the 2021/22 WSL Player of the Season award and securing the Golden Boot for her 20 goals in 20 appearances. Kerr is also a perennial nominee for the women’s Ballon D’Or, having been shortlisted since the award’s inception and placing third in last year’s voting.

As such, her on-pitch achievements certainly make her a worthy addition to the cover.

The next question for EA Sports is when a female player will appear on the standard edition cover all on her own? Perhaps that will be the first on that front too.

You can see the digital version of Kerr in the reveal trailer for FIFA 23 tomorrow evening via the video embedded below.
