See an unfinished version of the new Skate (and maybe play it too)

The latest game in the Skate franchise – stylised as “skate.” – has broken radio silence with a new trailer and the opportunity to play it yourself.

The trailer posits that this is a “pre-pre-pre-alpha” version of the game and it leans into the fact that things are very much unfinished.

We see a lot of unfinished textures, physics, models and more along with some elements that would be cool to see in the final game although we’re not sure if they’re just there for testing, such as a giant wall that looks like a Pachinko machine.

Despite the roughness here there is what looks to be some fun gameplay and those who agree may get to play this unfinished version of the game.

That’s because there’s an open call for public playtesters, called skate. insider, which anyone can sign up for on the EA website here.

“As a skate. insider, you have the chance to play early versions of the game and provide feedback throughout our development journey. We need to scale access to skate. gradually as development progresses to ensure a smooth experience, and that means we can’t guarantee how soon you’ll get to play,” the description reads.

“The skate. insider playtests will be CLOSED playtests for anyone selected to participate. Sharing any videos, captures, screenshots or streaming of anything in the game is prohibited. Please make sure to read the full terms and conditions before signing up.”

More details about the specifics of the programme can be found in the FAQ such as the fact that users must be over 18 and that signing up does not guarantee entry.

The first parts of the programme will also be done exclusively on PC through the EA Origin platform but console playtesting will come at a later stage.

As always we do want to point out that this is essentially free work for a massive company as quality assurance testing is supposed to be a paid job, but for massive fans of the Skate series of games this is the only way you’ll be able to try this title out ahead of time.
