Twitter rolls out Unmentioning to its entire community

While Twitter is embroiled in a now jeopardised sale to Elon Musk, it has not stopped the social media platform from launching new features. The latest is Unmentioning, which is now being rolled out to the entire Twitter community.

The feature was rolled in beta to a select number of users in April, but is now being made available to everyone with a Twitter account.

Given how chaotic conversations can get on the platform, the feature comes at a great time, and will allow users to have their handle removed from a conversation that could be frustrating or simply not of interest.

The process for Unmentioning is fairly straightforward, with the tapping on the three dots in a Twitter conversation you’re tagged in bringing up the option to “Leave this conversation.”

You can also do so from the Notifications section in your timeline, with the steps for Unmentioning is as follows:

“Step 1

From your Home timeline, navigate to your menu bar and select Notifications. Then go to your Mentions tab.

Step 2

Find the Tweet in which you’re mentioned that you wish to untag yourself.

Step 3

Tap or click on the more icon.

Step 4

Select Leave this conversation.

Step 5

You’ll receive a prompt that lets you know people can’t mention you again in this conversation and you won’t receive further notifications. To proceed, select Leave

Step 6

Once you leave the conversation, your username (or ‘handle’) link will be hidden.”
