LEGO has announced the latest product in its Ideas theme, a programme where fan designers can have their builds turned into retail sets after being voted on by the community. This has resulted in an upcoming lighthouse build that works like the real deal.
It accomplishes this thanks to a smattering of electronics, hence the full name of the set: “21335: Motorized Lighthouse”. Let’s ignore the American spelling of “motorized” for now.
Overseas pricing and availability has been announced already, but now we have more local specifications with the LEGO Certified Stores revealing a price of R5 499 and a release date of September 2022.
The set only comes with 2 065 pieces which is rather low for the price you’re paying here. For those unfamiliar with LEGO, most people usually want a price per piece ratio of around 10 US cents, or around R1.70 per piece, and this is obviously much more.
The aforementioned electronics are a big reason why the price is so high. If you had to buy those electronics on their own, again from the LEGO Certified Stores, then the money would add up quickly.
21335: Motorised Lighthouse comes with a battery box (R749), a medium motor (R299) and lights (~R182). With that in mind the South African price makes a bit more sense but it is still obviously a massive purchase.
As for sheer display value the set measures in at 54 X 25 X 25 centimetres (height X width X depth) and comes with two minifigures to pose around the lighthouse, its rocky base and a small house at the bottom.
The set also comes with an actual Fresnel lens which is what real lighthouses use, for that extra bit of authenticity.
While we hate watching videos on Twitter, we will embed one below from the official LEGO account showing off the movement and lighting of the set below.
Unfortunately there’s no similar upload on a better platform like YouTube. If you click on the LEGO.com link in the tweet the overseas product page does have additional videos to watch on the native video player too.
