Toby Fox is working on Pokémon, draws a Lucario with a flower hat

Toby Fox, the famous developer who made Undertale, is returning to the Pokémon franchise to compose music and has shared that news with a drawing of a Lucario in a flower hat.

If that last part has thrown you off, it’s because Fox is involved with the new gameplay mechanic known as the “Terastal Phenomenon”.

This replaces previous Pokémon gimmicks like Mega Evolution and Dynamaxing, and involves Pokémon becoming crystalline and gaining big hats. Yes really.

“What is the Terastal phenomenon? This phenomenon is found only in the Paldea region and makes Pokémon shine and glimmer like gems. When a Pokémon Terastallizes, a Tera Jewel appears above the Pokémon’s head like a crown, and the Pokémon’s body glistens like a cut gemstone,” reads the description on the official website for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

As Fox explains in the tweets below, he will be making music to accompany this and provides us with a visual of a prompt he received to steer his work.

“Ohmori-san” mentioned above is likely Shigeru Ohmori, a game designer at Pokémon developer Game Freak.

This is not the first time that Fox has worked on a Pokémon game either. You can listen to a preview of some of his work in Sword and Shield in the embed below, which is hosted on the main Pokémon YouTube channel.

An accompanying blog post about the collaboration is available to read here too where Fox explains that a simple DM on Twitter is what set things off.
