All the gaming events planned for this week’s Comic Con Africa

  • Comic Con Africa will have cross-platform tournaments on for three of the four days of the event.
  • There is a competition for game developers to highlight their creations called Project Springbok.
  • If you are only interested in playing some games, free-to-play areas will be up and running in the gaming hall.

Later this week, in three days on 22nd September, Comic Con Africa 2022 kicks off. The return to an in-person experience also sees the event last for all of Heritage Day weekend until 25th September.

As such, it will be interesting to see how this event will be able to bring in droves of South Africans as it did prior to the pandemic.

To ensure there is enough interest on the gaming side of things, organisers have a quite a few events on the go outside of a bevy of brands hawking their latest wares in the halls of Comic Con Africa.

Regarding those aforementioned events, here is what organisers will have on the go throughout most days of Comic Con Africa 2022.

In the competitive side of things, the following events are scheduled:

  • Telkom VS Gaming Masters
  • Telkom VS Gaming Championships (Rocket League)
  • eDiski (FIFA 2021)
  • High School eSport League (HSEL) finals
  • Dorito’s Crunch Cup
  • The Red Bull Campus Clutch South African Finals.

“Every day, Telkom VS Gaming will enthral and delight. Things kick off at 09:40 on Thursday, 22 September with the Grand Finals of the Rocket League. It then moves on to the eDiski semi-finals (11:45) and the upper bracket final in the Telkom VS Gaming Masters for Counterstrike at 13:10,” organisers add in a press release sent to Hypertext.

The competitive events will run over onto the Friday and Saturday too.

“Day 2 of the show keeps the pulse beating with the Grand Finals of the High School eSport league at 09:30, the second eDiski semi-finals (11:35), and the lower bracket final in the Telkom VS Gaming Masters for Counterstrike at 13:00,” organisers note.

“On Saturday, we’ve got the Counterstrike Grand Finals of the High School eSport League at 09:15, the third-place playoff in eDiski at 12:45 and the lower bracket Counterstrike final of the Telkom VS Gaming Masters at 14:10. Our final day sees the eDiski Grand Final at 09:40 following by the Telkom VS Gaming Masters Counterstrike Final at 11:05,” they continue.

Along with the above, also being singled out at Comic Con Africa are events for Nintendo fans.

To that end there will be the opportunity to compete on Switches and win some Nintendo hardware. Friday will focus on Super Smash Bros, while Saturday is all about Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and on Sunday the game du jour is Mario Kart Deluxe.

If competitions are not what you are interested in, there will also be the usual booths set up to experience console titles.

“Of course, the Gaming Hall at Comic Con Africa will feature extensive Free-to-Play Zones to give every gamer regardless of age or skill level an opportunity to play for free on the gaming equipment provided,” the press release points out.

Local unknown game developers will also be getting their time to shine too via the Con’s Project Springbok.

“We’ll select three top game developers from our Game Jam competition which opened for entries on 2 June. Each of them will get a stand in the Gaming Hall to showcase their titles. Fans will be able to vote for their favourite developer who gets to take home the title of Project Springbok 3.0 Winner along with some awesome prizes,” organisers confirmed.
