DJI’s new Osmo Action 3 ups the battery life and creator tools

When it comes to consumer-focused drones, few have come close to DJI in terms of the devices it offers. On the action camera side of things though, GoPro still reigns supreme, but now the latest iteration from DJI, the Osmo Action 3, is trying to change that.

To that end the new Osmo Action 3 is sporting a larger battery with longer recording time, as well as an improved sensor and a few more creator-specific features to make it more of a rival to the GoPro alternative.

Looking at the improvements, and starting with the battery life, a new 1 770mAh battery is present. This adds up to 160 minutes of recording time, and DJI have also added a quick charge mode that gets you from zero percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes, with 50 minutes of quick charge getting to 100 percent.

While the quick charging functionality is nice, a general rule of thumb is to have a few backup batteries on hand too.

As for the other improvements on offer here, the Osmo Action 3 can shoot in 4K at 120fps and serves up a wider 155-degree field of view. DJI also notes that an improved heat management system enables continuous 4K recording at 60fps recording until the battery runs out of power.

Other notable features include a waterproofness at depths of up to 16 metres without the need for an additional housing.

As for creator-specific elements, the Osmo Action 3 has RockSteady 3.0, which works to eliminate camera shake in all directions and works at up to 4K at 120fps. Added to this is HorizonBalancing which corrects the tilt horizontally within ±45-degrees and supports recording stable 4K at 60fps videos.

There’s a three-mic stereo array to help reduce wind noise and boost audio quality of footage for those wanting to use the Osmo Action 3 as a vlogging camera.

As for local pricing and availability, we will need to wait to hear from DJI on both of those aspects. For those Stateside, however, the Standard Combo model retails for $329 (~R5 751).
