Huawei bringing four new Nova series phones to SA

  • Huawei expanded its lineup of mid-range phones with four new options under the Nova banner.
  • Three of them will be available later this week – the Nova 10, Nova 10 Pro and Nova Y90.
  • There is also a Nova 10 SE on the way, but pricing and availability are yet to be shared by Huawei.

This week Huawei Mobile South Africa held an event at its Johannesburg campus to showcase its latest mid-range devices. To that end, the company has four new models of Nova smartphone heading to our shores, three of which will be available later this week.

Those three devices are the Nova 10, Nova 10 Pro and the Nova Y90, which should be available to pre-order or purchase locally from 22nd September. Some time in the near future, the Nova 10 SE will also be launched in SA, but Huawei is yet to confirm its availability, nor its recommended pricing at the time of writing.

As such, we will need to wait to hear more on the front, but for now there are at least three new phones to consider.

So what are they packing?

We’ll start at the top and work our way down, with the 10 Pro being the star attraction here.

The design language for the 10 series is similar across all its devices, with a new rear camera housing called the Star Orbit Ring. It is given a gold colourway to stand out against the Starry Silver and Starry Black colour options of the 10 series, with a few other gold accents added to the mix too.

As for the camera array inside said housing on the 10 Pro, it features a 50MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide macro option and 2MP depth sensing sensor. Up front things are also quite interesting, with Huawei focusing quite a bit on selfies and vlogging as the 10 Pro has a large 60MP ultra wide-angle and 8MP portrait lens. Added to this is object tracking and a dual view display mode, along with 5x lossless digital zoom.

The regular 10 is sporting the same system on the front and back, with the key differences between the two being the display sizes/quality and battery capacities/charging functionality.

To that end the 10 Pro and 10 feature a 6.78″ and 6.67″ screen respectively, with a 4 500mAh battery on the former and 4 000mAh battery on the latter. The 10 Pro has the added party trick of supporting 100W quick charging to yield a fully charged battery in 20 minutes.

As for recommended pricing on these new devices, the Nova 10 (256GB) carries a R12 999 price tag and the Nova 10 Pro (256GB) will retail for R15 999. The Nova Y90 is priced to sell for R5 799.
