iPhone 14 Pro models make debut with new “Dynamic Island”

In the lead up to this evening’s Apple Event, it was rumoured that the company would finally be ditching the eyesore that is its screen notch for the latest iPhone. As it turns out, Apple has indeed removed it, but only on its iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, choosing to replace it with the “Dynamic Island“.

The pretentious name aside, the pill-shaped display cutout is a rather interesting addition to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, as it serves as an almost second screen, where applications can be stored there and information.notifications displayed in an easier format.

“iPhone 14 Pro introduces a camera system that empowers every user — from the casual user to the professional — to take their best photos and video, and innovative new technologies like the Always-On display and the Dynamic Island, which offers new interactions for notifications and activities,” added Greg Joswiak, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, in a blog post.

Like its lesser specced brethren, the 14 Pro features a 6.1″ display and the Pro Max is a 6.7″ offering. Both models are powered by a new A16 Bionic chipset, which Apple has once again called its fastest chip to date. The silicon yields 40 percent faster processing from its CPU and 50 percent more memory bandwidth from its GPU.

“Using Apple’s best-in-class fusion architecture to combine performance and energy savings, the chip delivers more performance with a fraction of the power compared to the competition,” the company notes.

Other similarities to the rest of the iPhone 14 lineup include 5G and eSIM support, as well as the new Emergency SOS Satellite feature.

The rear camera array has also been reworked, with a new 48MP main lens present. “The quad-pixel sensor also enables a 2x Telephoto option that uses the middle 12 megapixels of the sensor for full-resolution photos and 4K videos with no digital zoom,” adds Apple of its capabilities.

At the time of writing, no local availability or pricing has been revealed, but we can expect pre-orders to up in SA and a number of other countries on 9th September. For now, the recommended pricing in the States for the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max from $1 099.
