New Surface devices expected at Microsoft event on 12th October

  • The event is taking place at 16:00 local time on 12th October.
  • We could see the a Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5 being revealed.
  • The hardware on show is expected to run Intel’s 12th Gen processors, but an ARM option is rumoured.

With IFA 2022 and Apple’s Far Out event now behind us, attention in October will be turning to Microsoft when it comes to consumer electronics. This as the company has issued a Save The Date for a Surface event on 12th October.

Full details on the event itself, including what devices are expected, are thin on the ground at the moment, but we do know that Microsoft will be live streaming the Surface showcase at 16:00 local time on the day.

Microsoft may have a few surprises in store, but industry insiders are anticipating new Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5 devices to be revealed.

On the silicon side of things, it is believed that said devices will be running the latest 12th Gen processors from iIntel, but that there may be an ARM-based model in the offing too. That option is also rumoured to support 5G connectivity, with 1TB storage and 16GB RAM for both Intel and ARM flavours.

As Engadget points out, Microsoft is not the only one set to showcase new wares, with Amazon holding a device event on 28th September and a Google Pixel one happening on 6th October.

Given that neither Amazon, nor Pixel hardware is officially sold in South Africa, there is a bit less to be excited for regarding those events. That is not the case, however, for the Microsoft event, as Surface devices have been landing in South Africa with increasing regularity in recent years.

Hopefully the window between the reveal to local availability will not be too long, as that is the one aspect that Microsoft needs to address when it comes to its Surface hardware in SA.
