The Sims 4, of all games, will become free to play

Games that go free to play (F2P) usually include live services titles and multiplayer-focused experienced, so it’s a bit odd today that publisher EA has announced the same fate for The Sims 4.

The most recent game in the long-running life sim series will make the change on 18th October. Anyone who wants to play can then do so for free on Mac, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

As you may have guessed the free version is the base game so the absolutely copious amount of DLC will still need to be purchased separately.

As an aside, if you want to buy all 59 pieces of DLC right now on Steam, you would need to fork over R15 897.15. It will be interesting to see how the price and amount of DLC will change going forward under a free to play model, but we won’t need to wait long for an update on that.

“With The Sims 4 going free to play, our team is more dedicated than ever to developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for our players and we will continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future. We’ll be sharing more about what’s in the works during a special-edition stream, Behind The Sims Summit on October 18, 2022 at 10 am PDT via The Sims YouTube and Twitch channels, also available on demand!,” an announcement reads.

Those who have already paid for the game will get a small token of thanks from EA in the form of the Desert Luxe Kit. Owners of the game need to boot it up between now and 17th October to claim this.

Subscribers to EA Play also got some extra content and we wouldn’t be surprised if, when the aforementioned summit comes out, it is announced that even more Sims additions come bundled with this service.

“EA Play and EA Play Pro members will receive an upgraded experience when member-only bundles of The Sims 4 go into The Play List on October 18. The Sims 4 EA Play Edition includes The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack, while the EA Play Pro Edition includes both The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack and The Sims 4 Toddler Stuff Pack,” the announcement continues.
