Game of the Year 2022 nominations revealed

  • The nominees have been revealed for the Game Awards 2022, the year’s most popular celebration of gaming excellence.
  • This year three games are leading the pack with the most nominations: God of War Ragnarok, Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West.
  • God of War and Elden Ring have been highlighted as favourites by fans, but since the top award goes to the game with the most votes, it could really be any of the nominees.

There are few video game events that can match the buzz surrounding this year’s Game Awards. While BAFTA has its own show recognising video game excellence the most popular and watched video game award ceremony is the Game Awards.

85 million people tuned into last year’s edition of the Game Awards across multiple streams, platforms and networks worldwide. When comparing viewership with say, the Oscars for example (16.1 million in 2022), it is clear that the Game Awards is a major deal.

And this year’s show will probably be the biggest hit yet for runner Geoff Keighley as it is buoyed by a major story around its most important award: Game of the Year 2022.

Yesterday to build anticipation for the event held on 8th December, the Game Awards revealed all of its nominations and fans were quick to point out that the main award category is stacked, with three games in particular raking up the most nods.

2022’s top award nominees are the recently launched A Plague Tale: Requiem, Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray and Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

In terms of total nominations, it’s a horse race between God of War Ragnarök, Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West.

God of War is this year’s most nominated game with ten total nods, including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score, Best Audio Design, Best Performance, Best Action/Adventure, and Innovation in Accessibility.

Both Elden Ring and Horizon came in second with seven nominations apiece, including many categories where God of War was likewise nominated including Best Game Direction and Best Narrative.

Elden Ring is up for Best Roleplaying Game alongside Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

It was a question this year if God of War would even be able to run for the event but it would be folly for the Keighley not to allow the game to compete with Elden Ring and dark horse Horizon Forbidden West for the top game especially since it has been a popular topic of conversation across social media and even in our office.

This year we foresee Elden Ring taking the main award due to its sustained popularity throughout the year with God of War sweeping across the other categories. But perhaps the event is turned on its head and Horizon takes the main prize.

Remember, the year’s top award is decided by the number of votes so if you think a nominated game deserves the win, then you should definitely have your say.
