South African satellite entertainment provider MultiChoice says that its streaming service Showmax Pro has seen a surge in growth ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
According to a press release sent to Hypertext, Showmax Pro has seen a subscriber growth of 111 percent year on year. The company cites a recent integrated report released by MultiChoice on 10th November.
The original Showmax streaming service is apparently “hot on its heels” with paid subscribers growing 50 percent year on year across Africa.
It is possible that recent efforts by the company could in part be responsible for some of this growth. The company recently engaged in a strategy of reducing prices for its live sports streaming subscriptions.
On 14th October, MultiChoice announced that it was slashing the prices of its Showmax Pro subscriptions to R299 per month, down from the regular R349.
“Showmax has reduced prices to give subscribers in South Africa even more affordable access to SuperSport’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar, which kicks off on 20th November 2022,” the company said at the time.
The dropped prices aren’t just for sports streaming, and MultiChoice confirmed to us that all content will be available through the reduced subscriptions.
However, the reduced pricing will only last until the end of January so now is probably a good time to jump on Showmax Pro if you were considering it to watch the World Cup, which Showmax says will be its “biggest broadcasting event yet.”
Last month, Showmax also announced that all 64 matches will be streamed live, courtesy of SuperSport and in 4K for Showmax Pro viewers, starting with this weekend’s kick-off between Qatar and Ecuador.
The 4K stream will have up to 50 frames per second (FPS), double the standard 25, says MultiChoice. The company has been testing its 4K streaming capabilities during selected Premier League matches. These tests have reportedly been successful.
