Microsoft dealing with worldwide Azure outages

  • Microsoft is dealing with outages in many countries across the world relating to apps like Teams, Outlook and even with its Azure products.
  • The company says its Azure issues are related to a recent update of its Wide Area Network (WAN).
  • Some customers have reported that they are unable to use any features of Teams, which is used by 280 million people worldwide.

Thousands of users worldwide are reporting outages on Microsoft apps including Teams and Outlook on Wednesday. The tech giant seems to also be having issues with its Azure products.

Reuters reports that 3 900 incidents of connectivity problems with Microsoft 365 apps have been reported in India, and over 900 in Japan, according to outage tracking website DownDetector. Outage spikes are also being seen in Australia, the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

“We are currently investigating a networking issue impacting connectivity to Azure for a subset of users. More information will be provided when it becomes available,” the company’s Azure Support team said in a tweet.

Microsoft reported that Azure customers may experience issues with networking connectivity “manifesting in network latency and/or timeouts when attempting to connect to Azure resources in Public Azure regions, as well as other Microsoft services including M365, PowerBI.”

The company says it has determined the issue is occurring with devices across the Microsoft Wide Area Network (WAN), which is impacting connectivity between clients on the internet to Azure, as well as connectivity between services in data centres, as well as ExpressRoute connections.

Further, it seems the issue is being caused by a recent WAN update. Microsoft says it is taking steps to roll back this update.

“Our telemetry shows signs of recovery across multiple regions and services, and we are continuing to actively monitor the situation,” the company reports.

Some users have turned to social media to share that they are unable to exchange messages, join calls or use any features on Teams. Others have turned to simply share updates for others using the hashtag #MicrosoftTeams.

More than 280 million people use Teams globally which is a vital part of daily operations for many businesses and schools that use the application to schedule meetings and general organisation.
