htxt.africast – The viability of online education in South Africa

This edition of the africast is sponsored by iTMaster.

Earlier this year, results at UCT Online High School drew the attention of South Africans.

Some parents, students and teachers decried the marking standards at the school as appalling and many saw the first year of the high school’s existence as a failure. However, many more have wondered out loud whether the failures encountered at UCT Online High School are due to systemic issues across a range of sectors.

Despite this, the online learning institution is working to address the concerns.

To find out more about online education and the education sector post-pandemic, Hypertext has assembled a panel of experts to discuss the matter. Are online high schools and is online education as a whole viable in South Africa? That’s the question we posed and there are some interesting perspectives to take note of.

Our panel of experts includes:

  • Sipho Mpisane – UCT Online High School’s Head of School for the (CAPS-aligned) NSC qualification
  • Janus van As – Academic and Blended Learning Coordinator at WITS
  • Jeff Walker – iTMaster

Throughout the podcast, we discuss the pitfalls regarding online education, the opportunities and what we hope to see as regards blended learning over the course of this decade.

This is a bumper edition of the africast, and we highly recommend giving this one a listen.
